Among other announcements, Harmonic showed their latest MPEG2 quality improvement. The system 8000 uses MPEG4 techniques to lessen the impact of artifacts on the picture. Instead of the all too familiar marcoblocking effect when a signal becomes corrupt the picture blurs in the affected area(s) resulting in a much less objectionable error and a better viewing experience.
Harmonic is also touting gains in MPEG2 HD delivery stating that there could be almost 2 Mb/s additional throughput with HD and SD signals are statistically multiplexed. This gain is only being realized in the 8000 series and is being measured against average content. Sports or higher motion content may react differently.
